THE actress Jennifer Aniston has just launched her first perfume. It could have been called many things - Airhead could have worked; Bad Choices in Men, Hasn't Done Anything Decent Since Friends, or Far Too Old For Romcoms might have been considered not punchy enough - but Aniston instead settled on the imaginative title of Jennifer Aniston.

At the launch of her fragrance, previously known as Lolavie - an unfortunate hybrid between the internet term LOL and the French word for "life" - Aniston claimed she'd spent two years developing it. I think we can safely assume this involved several minutes a year sniffing a test-tube of fizzing chemicals held by a timorous, white- coated geek - hardly what the rest of us would call work.

Best Swiss Watches Online Aniston did reveal that she had taken a shampoo, a candle and a lotion into the lab and asked for the fragrance to smell like "a sort of combination of all these things". (This adorable anecdote gave me an immediate image of a miniature schnauzer placing its love token - a deceased rat - on a pillow and excitedly waiting for a response.)

Celebrities are different from you and me: not just because they're rich, but because they appear to see nothing creepy about complete strangers wanting to smell like them. Nowadays, you haven't made it until you have a fragrance named after you. Even those at the plankton level of the celebrity food chain have their own perfumes.

Surely the most improbable person to launch a line of signature fragrances is Alan Cumming, a British character actor whose roles include pimps, perverts, a psychotic funfair attendant and the voice of Adolf Hitler. Cumming happens to be completely wonderful - the only instructions I've left my family in the event of my death is that they must play the gut-achingly hilarious dance scene from Romy and Michele's High School Reunion on a giant screen at my funeral - but it's hard to know quite how profoundly strange you'd have to be to want to let Cumming's scrubbing lotion (Cumming Off Buff) or soap (Cumming in a Bar) anywhere near your body.

WHAT motivates celebrities to team up with perfume houses is, of course, greed. An actor, musician or sporting star who endorses a perfume can expect to receive 5 per cent to 10 per cent of the profits, plus a signing fee. You'd assume being paid upwards of US$10 million a Burberry Bags Replica movie would make it unnecessary to indulge in such shameless hocking of the self, but apparently not. Even tawdrier is the fashion of becoming spokespeople for perfumes, rather than endorsing them. Clive Owen is a spokesman for Lancome Hypnose, while Ewan McGregor - famous for embarking on epic motorcycle journeys that prevent him from showering for weeks on end - apparently has useful things to say on behalf of a fragrance called Davidoff Adventure.

Indian cricketer Sachin Tendulkar has just announced plans to launch a deluxe "blood edition" of his autobiography, which will have his own blood mixed with paper pulp to create the signature page. The publisher conceded this is "not everyone's cup of tea" (which made me think, for a horrifying moment, that the blood- soaked pages were intended to double as a freaky, batsman- flavoured tea bag.)

If Tendulkar's autobiography is infused with his own blood, it's almost too upsetting to speculate about which body fluids might have been incorporated into David Beckham's horrifically named signature fragrance, Intimately Beckham. And yet this is not the most offputting title for a celebrity perfume. There's Sarah Jessica Parker's immodest Lovely, Naomi Campbell

How is India faring in terms of growth as compared to other emerging market economies?

The growth recovery in India has been quite spectacular over the last 12 months. Most other emerging economies, especially in Asia, are benefitting from the strong pick-up in export demand, both regionally and from China and developed economies as well. The growth pick-up was more domestically driven. After the recession was over the combined effect of loose monetary policy, fiscal stimulus and one of grants that came in the system in the form of sixth pay commission, the NREGA schemes being implemented in a much better fashion. I think with that combination we saw a big jump in domestic demand, particularly within the investment and capex spending sector. So while from that perspective India's growth recovery has been a 'V' shaped, the drivers of growth has been different as compared to some of its regional peers. Detroit-Pistons

What does this translate into in terms of foreign inflows?

Most foreign investors still remain structurally bullish on India. Barring a few concerns such as infrastructure and capacity constraints, people do, generally, acknowledge that India is going to grow at a rapid pace over the next 5-10 years. This is pretty valid in the amount of foreign inflows we have seen in the equity markets. In the context of the Asian region year to date, we have seen more than 50% of the foreign inflows in India, excluding Japan. So that is a clear indication that people, despite the relatively high valuations, remain fairly bullish on the Indian growth story.

Inflation is a big concern in India. Is it a concern even in other emerging economies?

Back in Q4 of FY10, when food inflation was picking up on the back of the drought, there was a case for early action to essentially clamp down on inflation expectations. christian louboutin Now, along with the growth recovery what we have seen is that demand side price pressures have picked up significantly. So as the output gap closes fast in India, we have domestic demand rising significantly and on the back of it raw material prices have been going up and underlying demand side pressures have been exaggerated. For the current month we expect inflation to be between 8-10%. Most people acknowledge that interest rates on medium term basis are going to rise. But I think the pace needs to be questioned rather than the direction and that is where the nuances within policy making are likely to pick up more now than it was one month earlier.

Compared to some of the other regional economies apart from the supply side pressures there are signs of demand side inflationary pressures in economies such as Korea. In China earlier in the year there were some concerns on inflation, but with the recent data showing that these concerns are coming down gradually. We have seen pressures on the inflation side and policy makers are concerned. Looking at countries such as Australia, India, China and Korea, these are the countries which saw some sort of demand side pressures and policy makers have accordingly reacted earlier.

What is the kind of rate hike you are expecting for the rest of the current financial year?

We are not expecting aggressive rate hikes from here. We expect one rate hike in the mid-quarter policy review of the policy in September. Beyond that there is an outside change that the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) will increase only the reverse repo and narrows the corridor even further in the November quarterly review. RBI is unlikely to be hawkish from here on. We are expecting 25 basis point

HAT-TRICK hero Tim Cahill is refusing to set himself any goal targets for the season despite his match-winning strikes against Norwich City.

The Australian struck his first club treble at Carrow Road on Saturday to help Everton gun down Paul Lambert's men 4-2 in an entertaining friendly, but was quick to cool talk of having his name at the top of the goal-scoring charts next term.

Instead, the 30-year-old was keen to highlight the strength of the Goodison Park squad ahead of the new Premier League season.

Cahill said: "It's always good to score and for me it is important to play as well as I can, especially after a break. I've got some minutes under my belt Ebel Watches and am now making sure I'm as fit as possible for the start of the season.

"I think everything right from the start of pre-season, from the tour to Australia to the training regime we've had, has been first class. A lot of the lads are looking and feeling fresh and sharp and the most important thing now is we all stay fit and make sure we take this form into the start of the season.

"We've got a great squad and a great team and we are building something special here.

"It's important for every player to put everything into pre- season because you start as you mean to go on. We've seen Jermaine Beckford get a couple of goals last week and he's looking sharp and it's been good to build relationships with the new players.

"For me, it's all about playing for the team and I'm very happy with the squad and what we've got."

Cahill also backed former Everton keeper John Ruddy, who was guilty of the error which gifted the Australian his first goal on Saturday.

"It was just one of them things, a lot of our players know how good Ruddy is so what happened this afternoon was just unfortunate" he added.

Presence et Parousie

PRESENCE ET PAROUSIE. By Jean-Yves Lacoste. Geneve: Ad Solem, 2006. Pp. 337. 30 [euro].

Lacoste is a philosophical theologian in continuity with the phenomenology of Husserl and Heidegger. He is often anthologized with those who express varied forms of post-modernism. Here I will restrict myself to a reflection on his description of theology and theology's bases.

L. asserts that we begin with Christianity as it fully is: an engagement with God as personal, anchored in the faith that God has taken the initiative to address us with his word, based upon witness, and lived within eschatological time directed toward the end times. L. claims that most post-modern theological reflections on Christianity do not accept Christianity as it is. For example, reflections based on Richard Rorty's epistemic commitments treat dialogue too restrictedly as conversation that despairs of common reference (95). Another reflection based on Wittgenstein's interpretation of language as a game does not account for a language that takes seriously God's tiffany heart toggle necklace intervention (98-101). L.'s own epistemology begins with human experience as fully corporeal, mediated by affect as well as by knowledge, and as engaged. Christianity's first language is that of the Bible and liturgy. For example, in the liturgy we engage mystery through common embodied things and gestures. Yet, at the same time and contrary to some post-modern theologies, L. continues, the embodied things we encounter exist only within a rupture; that is, embodied as they are, they simultaneously manifest what is beyond us and the world. For L., all other religious languages are secondary. They arc meta-languages, distant in different degrees from Christianity's embodied core.

Scriptural language is largely like that of liturgy--a proclamation and praxis by an engaged, believing community. It is fragmentary and expressed in metaphors, poetry, and other literary genres or devices. A theology that advances a grand narrative is not faithful to its origins in these fragmentary expressions. Tatian in the Diatesseron mistakenly tried to harmonize the Gospels into a single whole. The Greek Fathers continued this mistake and later theologians forgot the primacy of scriptural language and forgot that their accounts were based on metaphors. Theology, as Kierkegaard rightly showed, has to be fragmentary. Knowing when to be silent liberates the theologian. L. commends Barth (and the above account reminds us of Barth).

There is a genuine richness in L.'s reflections that I hope the above partial description suggests. Yet problems do emerge. L.'s interpretation of Scripture is conflicted. He recognizes that it witnesses to God's irruption into this world. Yet he does not acknowledge that scriptural metaphors and poetry frequently express pandora beads God's real symbols--for example, the appearances of the resurrected Jesus--beyond what can be expressed by simple declarative sentences. Theology must recognize the primacy of Scripture and liturgy, but their realistic basis and meaning cannot be defended without acknowledging their ontological content. Similarly, Scripture as a whole includes communication with Greeks, implying an acceptance of implicitly metaphysical knowledge, although L. simply overemphasizes differences between the Word made flesh and the Greek logos (see 82, 18284). Scripture itself does not justify a fideism to which L.'s theology is open. And if we recognize the place of hermeneutics in any and all communication, grand narratives (e.g., those of Augustine or Aquinas, let alone those of Paul or John), seem called for, even if from a later perspective we may partially modify them.

This Life

2010年9月1日

Byline: COLETTE CADDLE

W hen I was ten, I had a very glamorous American teacher who wore a different wig into the classroom each day. It was the Seventies, it was the fashion and she was a very stylish, confident lady. So one day we would arrive in to be greeted by a blonde bouffant, the next by a sleek-bobbed redhead; years later, just thinking about her makes me smile.

But that's not the only thing I recall about this teacher. She wasn't just pretty and flamboyant, she was passionate about letter-writing and was determined to instil that love in her students. To that end she set us up with American pen friends and once a fortnight we would write a letter to these strangers from a different world.

My pen friend was called Mitzy and she lived in Arizona. She was the same age as me but there the similarities ended. I was enthralled by her letters which detailed her very different life, and the fact that she had a pool in her backgarden made her seem like something straight out of a movie.

Before long, I didn't need my teacher to remind me to write to her. Mitzy was my friend and I wrote because I wanted to know all about her life and, strangely, she wanted to know all about mine.

Progression to secondary school and the angst of teenage years ended the correspondence by letter - I don't remember who stopped first - but my memories are all good. She was in a completely different compartment of Best A Lange & Sohne Watches Online my life but one I valued and enjoyed.

Hermes Fake I'm reminded of this when I hear negative comments about the many internet forums and chat rooms. 'People are holed up in corners chatting online to so-called friends,' I hear. 'Why don't they talk to the people around them?' Why, indeed.

I think part of the appeal is the anonymity. When you meet people online they have no preconceptions about you. They don't decide whether they want to be your friend based on your looks or your shape, your colour or your accent, the type of clothes you wear or the car you drive, the house you live in or where it's located.

All they have to go on is how you express yourself. All they get to 'see' of you is your mind. That in itself is intoxicating. It's not often in life that you are judged purely on what you have to say.

The other attraction is that, when online, you can be honest at a whole new level simply because these people are not a part of your real everyday life. With our families, friends and colleagues we temper our comments so as not to cause hurt or offence.

We try and protect those closest to us from our troubles, attempt to hide our disappointments and may even remain silent about aspirations or ambitions unrealised.

Online, however, it's possible to say any and all of those things. Not only is that very liberating, it is also quite therapeutic.

As for the perceived antisocial aspect of chatting online, I think it is melodramatic to throw up our hands in horror and mourn the loss of the old days and a time when people talked to each other, face to face, eyeball to eyeball.

We forget that, in the past, writing letters was often the only way to communicate and people from every walk of life, with varying degrees of skill, did so all the time.

These new worldwide forums are the platform for letter-writing, 2010-style. Yes, the terminology has changed and there are abbrev

2010年9月1日

I defy any reasonable person not to be in complete agreement with Ms Spencer-Barclay (letter Bath Chronicle, July 22) concerning the 'Traffic experts' responsible for the ludicrous chaos that passes for traffic arrangements in the SouthGate/Dorchester Street area and, of course, the entire city area.

It is such a pleasure to read such an interesting and intelligent letter and I congratulate her.

She tells us that she has been challenged about her 'credentials', something I consider extremely easy to Best Dolce & Gobbana Jewelry Online explain. I'm sure that which she writes flies in the face of all that would be considered appropriate by the vast majority of Replica Franck Muller those making up the ranks of B&NES Council. It is unthinkable that anyone capable of putting together ideas and criticisms in such a cerebral manner could possibly find favour with the music hall act that passes for the ruling executive in this City.

Given the opportunity to make something of the SouthGate shopping precinct, a replacement bus station and a smooth-running road system we get a cluster of Lego constructed buildings with the chilling coldness of a stark Teutonic war cemetery, a vulgar lean-to greenhouse (buy one get one free) as a bus station and a traffic system which suggests it was designed by a group of unfortunates on day release from an asylum for the incurably insane.

Cheaply cigarettes

The abomination that purports to be a traffic-lights system is so ill designed and confusing that obviously innocent motorists appear to continually misread the signals. However, it does serve one useful purpose to buses coming from, St James's Parade. I have frequently seen two buses acting in unison allowing the bus heading for the bus station to flip lanes and shielded by the other bus, jump the stop lights and belt into the station entrance. It makes one wonder if that facility was by accident or design.

BANNING a new "legal high" drug every single day of the year would not be enough to stop people using them, experts have warned.

The stark message comes just two days after the Government announced plans to introduce year-long restrictions on any new party drugs to allow them to be investigated.

But experts said chemists would simply change the ingredients in substances like Ivory Wave - which is sold under the pseudonym bath salts - and sell them under another name.

And an unnamed drug treatment professional told Wales on Sunday that substances - both legal and illegal - were easily available on the country's streets.

She said there was "shedloads" of Ivory Wave on offer in Wales, while many users are still taking mephedrone - which was outlawed in April after being linked to more than 20 deaths.

Ivory Wave has been blamed for the death of chef Michael Bishton, whose body was found in the sea in Whitecliff Bay, near Bembridge, Isle of Wight, last weekend.

And while other drug treatment workers said there had been no reports of problems with Ivory Wave in Wales yet, they did not expect to have to wait long.

Martin Daniels, a senior case worker Indianapolis-Colts at Drugaid Wales, said: "Ivory Wave could be in Wales at the moment but we have had no reports of it and no users saying they know of it. But it's only a matter of time."

And Janet Roberts, manager of drug and alcohol helpline Dan 24/ 7, said even though no one had come forward it did not mean people were not using the powder, which can also be shipped through the internet.

"We are way behind the kids using the stuff," she said. "Until people start knocking on the door saying 'I'm taking this and I've got a problem' we are probably not that aware.

"Out there on the streets the kids are probably already aware. There is no reason to believe it won't be in Wales."

She added: "I think the legal highs in Wales - as in other parts of the UK and the world - are a big problem but it is still quite hidden. A lot of young people are using them at weekends and see it as a party drug."

Mr Daniels said some people would take drugs like Ivory Wave to try to impress their friends.

He said: "A percentage of people we work with would take it just to try it or because their mates have used it."

And he said there was still a problem with people using mephedrone - also known as Mcat and miaow-miaow - even though it has been made illegal.

He said: "People are still coming through our services using mephedrone, even though they know the dangers. It's quite easy to pick up on the streets."

One Cardiff University student revealed how he had used mephedrone last summer - before it was affliction made a class B drug in April this year.

He told Wales on Sunday: "I tried mephedrone when my friends were using it. I was at a festival and I thought 'why not?' "Nothing was ever proven about the health risks. I was never particularly concerned about that aspect. It is stupidly cheap and why endanger yourself with illegal stuff when it's so easy to get hold of?" He slammed the Government's decision to criminalise mephedrone as a "knee-jerk" reaction, and said the plans to impose immediate, temporary bans on new substan

Police hunting arsonist

2010年7月14日

TWO homes were targeted in early morning arson attacks.

Fire crews were first called to a blaze at a house on York Terrace, in Chester-le-Street, shortly before 2am yesterday.

Arsonists set fire to a recycling bag and placed it up against the back uPVC door of the house before fleeing the scene.

A man and woman, who were sleeping upstairs, were woken by the smoke alarms and ran downstairs where the saw smoke.

The man shut the kitchen door but the couple were unable to get out the house as they'd lost their keys. The woman panicked and smashed a downstairs window, cutting her hand.

The man eventually found a key and the pair escaped before firefighters and an ambulance arrived. The woman was taken to the University Hospital of North Durham suffering from cuts and shock.

At around 2.30am, a police officer drove past a home on Jollisse Street, just a few streets away from the first fire, and saw smoke coming from a garage.

A fire had been started in some boxes inside the building. An elderly man managed to escape from the house. After investigations by fire teams and the police, it was discovered both fires were deliberately set and were linked.

Group manager Keith Wanley said all the victims were lucky. He said: "We take arson very seriously. We will be working together with the police to catch those responsible for yesterday's fires."

Anyone with Tiffany Pendants any information is asked to contact police on 0345 606 0365.

Polanski and the law

2010年7月14日

Here we go again. If Roman Polanski is not brought to trial it will be as significant as O.J. Simpson's cat and mouse game with the legal system.

I feel somewhat badly that the victim in this case does not want to proceed but the message that is sent to other offenders, victims and potential victims is that as long as you are talented you can do whatever you like to others. There is a clear law in the United States regarding sexual activity with 13-year-olds and I am quite sure that he was fully aware of it.

What is wrong with people who believe that just because you have managed to avoid facing consequences you should get brownie points? Maybe you should get double penalties! All of this preferential treatment suggests that only second-class citizens are held legally accountable. There isn't even shame in supporting his freedom. No wonder people are developing such disregard for the law.
